For the holidays, fashion designer BECCA MCCHAREN is locking up her studio in Brooklyn, and hopping on a train to Virginia to visit family. Every year, McCharen and her brother get together and build a crazy asymmetrical gingerbread house. “He’s a chef, so he makes elaborate structure, and since I do all this architecture-based work, I build a weird avant-garde house.” After Christmas she’ll ring in the New Year in nearby Baltimore. “I have a lot of artist friends who live in warehouses there. It’s cheap rent and crazy fun.”
This holiday season, KATE SCHELTER as a fashion stylist and creative director for her West Village-based company Kate Schelter LLC and head up to Boston and Cape Cod for Christmas. She’ll cook and decorate the Christmas tree with her family, she says, “It’s low key, with her husband, to spend New Year's on the beach. “My husband and I have a tradition: every year on New Year’s Day, we write out goals for the new year-things we want to try or places we want to go. We write the list out for each other, and then I post mine on my bulletin board by my computer, so I see it everyday.”
